The Taipei City mayor election is starting to count down. At this sensitive time, an internet video recently emerged, showing someone firing a rifle at Ko's campaign giveaways. Ko responded to it by saying that he is against any form of violence, and also demanded that all candidates to publicize their campaign budget, to which his opponents, KMT Candidate Ting Shou-chung and Democratic Progressive Party Candidate Pasuya Yao, both agreed.
Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je has attended a ceremony in which he presents awards to standout volunteers who engage in environmental protection effort. Ko had originally declined to attend the Taipei and New Taipei youth forum, but he said he might change his plan after scheduling his leave on November 8. Ko also commented on a recent internet video in which a member of public fires a rifle at gold medals with Ko's name engraved on them to express his dissatisfaction on Ko not fulfilling his promises to his voters.
I'm against hate messages, which could lead to real violence. There is too much of this in the world. I'm wondering whether people in Taiwan can work together to get rid of hatred that's based on difference in ideologies.
Despite the latest incident, Ko continues to hold a lead in support ratings against his opponents. A Japanese media outlet reported that Ko has a decent chance to run for Taiwan's president in 2020. Ko stressed that he has no plan on running for president and that there's nothing he can do about media reports on the matter. On the other hand, Ko has asked all candidates to publicize their campaign budget. His opponents, KMT Candidate Ting Shou-chung and DPP Candidate Pasuya Yao, have both agreed but also criticized Ko for running his campaign on government fund.
That's no problem, we can publicize our budget together. We can reveal the figures during our public debate and check just how much government fund Ko Wen-Je has spent on his own campaign.
Ting Shou-Chung focuses on environmental issues during his campaign, including plans to reduce the large amount of garbage in Neihu district, and to expand installation of AirBoxes to 456 villages in Taipei to monitor air quality. On the other hand, DPP candidate Pasuya Yao claims that there are a lot of things that needs to be cleared up in Ko's campaign budget details.
Let's start the public debate soon. I can reveal my campaign budget along with all others if the debate is tomorrow. I'm ready any time. Ko's campaign budget account details in the last election was unclear, and he needs to respond to all the question about his budget first.
Pasuya Yao also said that there are plenty of fake news, and that the poll figures could be off by as much as 15 percent. Yao said he remains confident despite falling behind his two opponents.
