Three police officers stationed at the Zhong Zhou Ferry Station in Kaohsiung's Qijin District have been diagnosed with Dengue infection. Officials have boarded the ships in the harbor the following day to measure the public's body temperatures and to continue disinfecting the area.
Officials from Kaohsiung City's Department of Health are testing the public on the ferries for their body temperatures. At the Zhong Zhou Ferry Station, from where the public boarded the ferry, a local police was diagnosed with Dengue virus on September 8, making him the third police officer in the last seven days to be infected with the virus. The latest testing is an effort to find out if any member of the public was infected due to close proximity to the source. The nearby shop owners and vendors have voluntarily started a disinfection effort with bleach in order to avoid further escalation of the epidemic which could affect the tourism business.
We dilute bleach with water and spray it (in our surrounding) every day. The shops in the area have all done it.
We apply mosquito repellent on our children all the time. (If there are patients with Dengue virus in the area), we'd probably avoid coming here.
The city's Department of Health has been spraying disinfectant in the past five days. The large number of deserted tires and various types of containers in the area, as well as the frequent raining in recent weeks, have made it much easier for mosquito larvae to survive and spread diseases. Officials found that some residents in the area still didn't clean up their water containers, and have issued a total of 10 tickets to those responsible.
Other than the large number of empty houses in the area, there are also massive number of deserted tires in storage, as well as some water buckets. These can all become dangerous hotbeds for mosquito larvae to survive. And there actually are massive number of disease carrying mosquitos nearby.
The city's marine bureau has also asked all the owners to clear their ships of standing water after they dock in the area in order to avoid further spreading of the virus.
