A swine fever outbreak has taken place in Japan. According to the investigation, the outbreak took place in a pig farm in Gifu prefecture. 610 pigs have been culled so far. This is also the first swine fever in 26 years in Japan. Taiwan has not imported any pork from the pig farm in question and will not be affected by the outbreak.

Dressed in full hazmat suits, the epidemic prevention personnel are busy disinfecting the area and culling the pigs. On September 3, pigs in a pig farm in Japan's Gifu Prefecture suddenly began to die of inexplicable causes. The Japanese officials confirmed on September 8 that the pigs were infected with classical swine fever and they decided to cull all 610 pigs in the area. Officials from Taiwan's Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine said that Taiwan was once affected by swine fever, but won't be affected by the latest outbreak in Japan.

Since the case in 2007, there was no new case of swine fever found in Taiwan. 99 percent (of our pigs) has been vaccinated, they're all well-covered.

The classical swine fever is different from African swine fever in that it can be prevented by vaccination. However, the Japanese government still announced a new ban, starting September 9, on the export of pork produced from the pig farms in this infected area. Taiwan has imported a small amount of pork from Japan, totaling only 36 tons, and none of it is produced from the pig farm area in question.

So far, Taiwan's has granted approval to import pork from 10 pig farms in Japan, and the pig farm in question is not one of them.

The last swine fever outbreak in Japan took place 26 years ago. The latest epidemic shows that Japan is no longer an area free of epidemic diseases. The route for infection of the virus is currently unknown. The Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine stressed that both the classical swine fever and the African swine fever are not transmittable between pigs and humans.
