Since becoming mayor, Taipei City Mayor Ko Wen-je has greatly reduced subsidies for old people. This has led to his support ratings to fall. Both of his opponents, Ting Shou-chung and Pasuya Yao, say they will restore the subsidies if they are elected.
Taipei City Mayor Ko Wen-je visited with borough chiefs in Zhongshan District on the final day of the long weekend. His first stop was Pitou Borough, where he met with borough chief Lin Ming-qing. Lin is a member of the Democratic Progressive Party and raised eyebrows when he showed support for Ko.
There's no need to overanalyze. This Taiwan, this society is always being held hostage by ideology.
I'm just doing my thing as borough chief and he's just doing his thing as mayor. We are just doing our jobs. I'm telling you, I probably won't (be expelled by the party), because the DPP isn't such a no-guts person.
Lin said he is not afraid of having his DPP membership revoked and said he is focused on his responsibilities. Ko's chances of being reelected are greater if he has the support of borough chiefs, but his approval rating has fallen since he slashed subsidies for the elderly. His opponents for mayor, Ting Shou-chung and Pasuya Yao, both say they will reinstate the subsidies if elected.
If they restore the subsidy for old people, will they also cancel the senior welfare policy that Ko Wen-je is currently promoting? The answer is no. I think they are just spending more money. In politics, you shouldn't throw out blank checks. Sometimes, I joke that they are throwing out blank checks because they know they won't win. Right?
Apart from his rebuttal, Ko also said the monthly NT$1280 All-Pass Ticket was designed as a revenue source for Taipei and New Taipei and it would be irresponsible of his opponents to casually cut the ticket price.
