Desertification Affecting Livelihoods on West Coast|濁水溪出海口變沙漠 漁民捕嘸鰻苗

At present, there are six square kilometers of coastal desert at the Zhuoshui River estuary. Citizen groups say the reason for the sand accumulation is Jiji Weir and the No. 6 Naphtha Cracker Complex's land reclamation. Local fishermen add the desertification has made it virtually impossible for them to capture fish.

A person standing on the north shore of Zhuoshui River in Changhua's Dacheng Township can see a swathe of sand leading to the No. 6 Naphtha Cracker Complex in the distance.

If you look downwards from the end of the buildings, you can see a bit of the curvature of sand dunes.

On the south shore, there is a three-kilometer-long, two-kilometer-wide stretch of sand dunes along the river bank.

This coastal desert is nearly six square kilometers in size. It is located along the south shore of Zhuoshui River in Yunlin County, and continues all the way until the estuary. Members of local citizen groups say they have childhood memories of a beautiful river. The river changed following the construction of Jiji Weir. The situation was exacerbated by the No. 6 Naphtha Cracker Complex's land reclamation project.

Right now sand has accumulated over a large area. The area may have reached 6,000 square kilometers. The Jiji Weir took away most of Zhuoshui River's water, so how much water do you expect there to be left downstream? Could it be that evil causes bring evil results?

Fishermen in Dacheng Township lament the changed appearance of the river. The sand from the coastal desert not only gets into the homes of nearby residents, but has also affected the livelihoods of fishermen.

The soil here is dirty, and has wiped out our entire marine ecosystem. We have to travel farther to go out to sea to fish, and even then it's hard to catch fish.

Fishermen say the desert is the result of the 20-year battle between humankind and nature over land and water. A Dacheng Township worker captured footage of the desert and posted it online, catching the attention of ecologists. They have begun discussing ways to respond to the desertification. However, local residents are very pessimistic. They believe the problem will only grow more severe unless the source of the problem is resolved.
