The annual Baishatun Matsu Pilgrimage, Taiwan's longest-distance Matsu pilgrimage, kicked off early on the morning of May 16. After proceeding for over 30 hours, the group arrived in Yunlin's Beigang. Tens of thousands of devotees paid their respects along the way with fireworks and firecrackers.

Devotees start gathering early in the morning with fruit and drinks to await Mazu. Others are waiting for the chance to pray under her precious palanquin.

We welcome Mazu with thousands of firecrackers, 60 meters high. This is what we've done for 10 or 20 years.

I'm praying for peace and safety.

The Baishatun pilgrimage is a major event for Beigang. I want my students to experience this meaningful event.

Miaoli's Baishatun Matsu Pilgrimage started over a century ago. The pilgrimage team walks over 400 kilometers to Beigang's Chaotian Temple. There is no designated route and the trip usually takes around 30 hours.

Over 40,000 people registered, which is more than last year. Of course, residents of townships around Beigang will follow the pilgrimage to Beigang. By the time the pilgrimage reaches Beigang, there are over 200,000 people.

A Chaotian Temple team welcomed the arrival of the Mazu sculpture as adjacent roads filled with people. A fire ceremony will be held on the 19th before the pilgrimage team heads back to Miaoli.
