PROSECUTORS REBUT MA'S CRITICISM AS MISLEADING PUBLIC|馬批辦案錯誤 北檢反擊:勿民粹誤導視聽

Former President Ma Ying-jeou criticized prosecutors last Friday after legal arguments concluded in an illegal wiretapping trial involving him at the Taipei District Court. He said that the prosecutors based their case on speculation and that the charges were trumped up. The Taipei District Prosecutors Office held a press conference on the morning of July 10 to rebut Ma's assertions. They said that Ma should not use such charged language to mislead the public. ==MA YING-JEOU Former President (July 7, 2017)== He (the prosecutor) speculated that I was feuding with Wang Jin-pyng, and used that as evidence for their trumped-up charges. After arguments concluded on a wiretapping scandal involving former President Ma Ying-jeou, Ma openly criticized the prosecutors of the case. After Ma discovered that Wang was suspected of influence peddling, he jumped at the opportunity. The Taipei District Prosecutors Office emphasized that Ma and Wang's feud was not speculation, but an open secret. As for Ma's accusation that the prosecutors had ignored Wang's influence peddling case, the Prosecutors Office responded that influence peddling is not a crime in current law and retorted that then-President Ma was the one person who "took no action" during the scandal. ==MA YING-JEOU Former President (July 7, 2017)== They (the prosecutors) took no action and willfully misinterpreted Constitutional Interpretation No. 585. The influence peddling case greatly harmed our judicial independence, but the prosecutors are unconcerned. ==CHANG CHIEH-CHIN Chief Prosecutor, Taipei District Prosecutors Office== The Criminal Code has no provisions regarding penalties for influence peddling. The defendant was president for eight years, six years of which he was the chairman of the country's biggest political party. Yet no action was taken during his term to legislate against influence peddling. His assertions are simply beyond comprehension. Responding to Ma's accusation that its actions were self-contradictory, the Taipei District Prosecutors Office said that the KMT had lost both its court cases regarding the Huang Shih-ming leaks and the revoking of Wang Jin-pyng's membership before Ma left office and that nothing had changed after the DPP took office. The Prosecutors Office said that Ma should stop deceiving the public with charged language. Ma's office has yet to respond as of press time.
