A Filipino worker on a fishing boat was nearly pushed overboard during a dispute with a Taiwanese worker. The Yilan Migrant Fishermen Union criticized the government for migrant fishing workers' poor human rights . The union cited a previous case where an Indonesian worker was given up for deportation as soon as he was diagnosed with cancer. Fortunately, the union was able to intercede and the man is now being treated in Taiwan. This was not a joke, it was done with intent. If they had pushed harder, or he had not held on so tightly, he might have gone overboard. The Yilan Migrant Fishermen Union held a press conference on the morning of June 19 slamming the lack of human rights protections for migrant fishing workers in Taiwan. They cited another case involving an Indonesian worker diagnosed with cancer who was going to be deported even though he had paid into the National Health Insurance for 8 years. ==TSAI YEN-LING Ass. Then they took him to start the departure process. The union was able to intercede, and the worker has now begun treatment at the Poh-ai Hospital in Luodong. The union said that Taiwan has received a yellow card from the European Union fisheries authority due to its inhumane treatment of migrant workers in the fishing industry. The next step could be a red card, which will ban Taiwan from exporting fish to the EU, causing NT$7 billion in losses. It called on the government to better protect the labor rights, personal safety, and medical rights of migrant fishing workers.
