CHINA CONFIRMS LEE MING-CHE ARRESTED FOR SUBVERSION|中國國台辦:李明哲涉"顛覆國家政權罪"被捕

Former DPP party worker Lee Ming-che has been out of contact with his family in Taiwan for over 2 months. On May 26, China's Taiwan Affairs Office confirmed that Lee had been accused of subversion of state power, and pleaded guilty. NGO groups went to the Ministry of Justice to protest and asked the Ministry of Justice to immediately negotiate to protect Lee's safety and legal interests. On May 26, China's Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson An Fengshan said that Lee Ming-che had been accused of subversion of state power and had been arrested by Hunan Province security services. This was the first time in the over two months that Lee has been missing, that the China Taiwan Affairs Office confirmed that Lee has been arrested and charged. NGO groups which have been assisting Lee's wife, Lee Ching-yu, were angry at China's actions. ==HSIAO YI-MIN Director, Judicial Reform Committee Appeals Center== Lee is not a single case, but a whole problem. We ask the Ministry of Justice to send personnel immediately. The country should coordinate and carefully deal with this issue. ==CHIU CHUI-ZHENG MAC spokesperson== China should swiftly announce the evidence and allow relatives to visit and must protect Lee's legal rights. According to the People's Republic of China law, subversion of the state is any action taken against the state. For first offenses, the punishment is life imprisonment or over ten years imprisonment. For active participants, the punishment is over three years and up to 10 years imprisonment. In the past, the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo was arrested on the same charges. Lee is the first Taiwanese to be arrested on these charges. As China clearly takes Taiwanese residents to be subject to China's law and to have subverted it, a group of analysts held a forum and said this was a serious warning to Taiwan. ==SHIH CHENG-FENG Prof., Dept. NGO groups released a joint statement demanding that the UN human rights committee strongly condemn China's conduct. They will start a new petition and co-ordinate continued activities on human rights in China, calling for more people to join.
