Many believe Trump is showing a hard line stance against China, by signing two executive orders to look into the root cause of US' trade deficit. The move came just days before he meets with Chinese President Xi Jin-ping. While Beijing tries to play it cool by saying China is actually helping address the trade deficit by investing in the US and creating job opportunities there, many still predict the meeting between the world's most powerful leaders could be a little bit bumpy. U.S. President Donald Trump on March 31 met with members of the National Association of Manufacturers, he mentioned about issues to be discussed in the upcoming meeting with Chinese President Xi Jin-ping. Trump said that unfair trade competition and environment are causing the U.S. employment opportunities going away to China, Mexico and other countries. Trump later signed two executive orders to deal with trade deficit and unfair trade practices. Trump's action demonstrates his stance to show Chinese President Xi the trade deficit U.S. has with China. ==DONALD TRUMP U.S. President== Under my administration, the theft of American prosperity will end. We're going to defend our industry and create a level playing field for the American worker, finally. Today, I am signing two executive orders that send this message loud and clear and that set the stage for a great revival of American manufacturing. Trump signed two executive orders, the first one was ordering Department of Commerce and the U.S. Trade Representative to examine the countries or firms who are responsible for America's US$500 billion trade deficit last year. Department of Commerce shall submit a comprehensive report to President Trump in 90 days. Trump's second order was to enforce countervailing duties on unfair trade practices. Also, the U.S. is to assess mechanism to impose financial penalties on pirating intellectual properties of U.S. enterprises. Washington officials emphasized the two executives orders are not the warning shots before Chinese President Xi's visit on April 6 and 7. The officials did admit that China has been the main factor to the U.S. trade deficit. Last year, the deficit amount reached US$347 billion. Analysts pointed out, Trump signed the two executive orders was to fulfill his campaign promise showing that he tries to end trade deficit within his first 100 days in the White House. Another purpose was to set tones for his meeting with Chinese President Xi. TRANSLATED BY:ANTHONY LIN
