REACTOR HALTS AFTER PUMP MALFUNCTION|

On Jan.24, the first reactor of the No. 3 Nuclear Power Plant suffered a malfunction. One of the reactor's cooling water pumps tripped, causing the cooled water inside the machine to decrease, triggering the reactor to stop operating automatically. Taipower said that there is no threat of radiation, and they will identify the cause of the incident as soon as possible.
In the morning of Jan. 24, at 6:25 am, one of the two reactors at the No. 3 Nuclear Power Plant stopped working. White smoke was even seen by nearby residents. According to Taipower, one of the first reactor's cooling water pumps malfunctioned, triggering the reactor to automatically stop operating. It also said that the white smoke was just water vapor, generated naturally when the reactor stops. Although there is no threat of radiation, Taipower said that the reactor malfunction affects the stability of power supply.

Power supply is affected, around 3 percent or more. (Will it be repaired soon?) We are now investigating into the incident, and we have clues to it.
The No. 3 Nuclear Power Plant is the only pressurized water reactor plant in Taiwan. When cooled water is sent to the reactor, hot water is generated and sent to the turbine to produce water vapor. The water vapor then pushes the generator, creating power. The cooled hot water is transferred back to the cooling water pump and sent back to the reactor for re-use. In this incident, one of the cooling water pumps went wrong, resulting in a low level of water in the cycle, leaving the reactor unable to work. However, the Atomic Energy Council said that detailed cause of the incident requires further investigation.

This happened once before in the 1990's, causing the reactor to suddenly stop. There was a problem with the electricity supply. We are still looking into this latest incident.
After identifying the cause, Taipower needs to submit a report to the AEC for review to reopen the first reactor. Since the reactor accounts for 3 percent of the total power supply, the incident provoked an orange alert, meaning that the current percent operating reserve is below 6 percent.
