Since President Tsai Ing-wen took office on May 20, 2016, the number of Chinese tourists visiting Taiwan has decreased sharply. The Central Bank citing Tourism Bureau statistics, pointed out that the average amount of money a Chinese tourist spent per day fell to US$208.31 during the first six months of 2016. This means that Chinese tourists continue to spend less than Japanese tourists, and now Singaporean tourists spend more than Chinese tourists do.
Tour buses carrying Chinese tourists came one after another, stopping in front of a well-known Taiwan souvenir shop. The shop was crowded with Chinese tourists busy packing their souvenirs in boxes, to take them home to share with their friends and relatives.

The number of Chinese tourists visiting Taiwan has decreased sharply since President Tsai Ing-wen took office on May 20, 2016. According to the Central Bank, in 2015, a Chinese tourist spent US$227.58 per day on average, which is only a little lower than Japanese tourists, at US$227.59. However, during the first six months of 2016, the average amount of money a Chinese tourist spent per day fell to US$208.31. Besides spending much less than Japanese tourists, Chinese tourists now spend even less than Singaporean tourists. The Travel Agent Association of Taiwan said that as the demand for travel to Taiwan declines, fees for tour groups fall, which leads to a decrease in the amount of money spent during trips.

In the past, during peak season, fees for tour groups soared high. However,as the demand for travel to Taiwan declines, fees for tour groups fall. This will definitely affect the total amount of money spent during trips.
The Central Bank said that Taiwan faces a similar situation to Singapore and Hong Kong, which is lack of sufficient cultural and natural resources to develop tourism. However, by creating a good environment for travel businesses, building more infrastructure, and setting more complete regulations, Taiwan can increase its competitiveness in tourism and achieve high tourism revenue.
