As the number of Chinese visitors decreases, the tourism industry and the government are thinking of ways to draw visitors from other countries. Experts say that there are actually many attraction spots in Taiwan. However, failing to show their uniqueness and come up with comprehensive development plans, have prevented these places from becoming popular tourist attractions. Walking into the only remaining blacksmith shop on the Nantun Old Street, visitors can see various well-made farm tools made of iron. ==TSAI TIEN-SHUN, blacksmith shop owner== We are confident in our products' quality. You can dig with it easily, and the steel stem of the shovel is very thick. Over the past 80 years, the blacksmith shop has witnessed the rise and fall of Nantun Old Street, where there used to be many blacksmith shops. As the old street no longer flourishes, the blacksmith shop owner does not dare to think about attracting visitors. ==TSAI TIEN-SHUN, blacksmith shop owner== There are not many visitors here. If shops cannot make enough money, they will close. Visitors come to the old street mainly to eat. The Nantun Old Street is Taichung City's oldest street. Located beside the fertile land of Fazi River, it was clustered with blacksmith shops due to the many farms nearby. However, its glory days are over. Even though the locals now try hard to promote tourism and create a nostalgic atmosphere, this is ineffective. ==LAI CHIH-YU, Taichung Local Culture Association== The property owners do not let other people either rent or buy their houses at reasonable prices. Therefore, a lot of shops decided to close their businesses. Other old streets in the central region of Taiwan face a similar situation. Although they are rich in culture, it is difficult for them to attract visitors. In Nantou's Sun Moon Lake area, the Ita Thao Village shopping street has little sense of indigenous culture. It is filled with night market food. Experts pointed out that Taiwan's tourist spots lack originality or local integration. ==HUANG CHENG-TSUNG, Associate Professor, Providence University's Dept. of Tourism== It takes time to innovate. Copying is faster. Experts believe that Taiwan's tourist spots should emphasize their own cultural uniqueness and the government should have a thorough plan for assisting in their development.
