US Warship Transits Taiwan Strait 對印太安全承諾 美艦班福特號昨通過台海

The USS Benfold transited the Taiwan Strait on July 19 to show the U.S.' commitment to Indo-Pacific security. The Ministry of National Defense said it was fully aware of all nearby movements during the transit, while China criticized the U.S. for provocations that create risks across the Taiwan Strait. Meanwhile, President Tsai Ing-wen received European Parliament Vice President Nicola Beer.According to a press release issued by the U.S. Navy's 7th Fleet, the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Benfold transited the Taiwan Strait on July 19. The statement said the Benfold carried out a freedom of navigation operation that demonstrated the U.S.' commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific. The Benfold was sailing near Nansha on July 16, so it's believed it transited the strait heading north from south.  Sun Li-fang, Spokesperson, Ministry of National Defense: “The ship sailed northward through the strait. The military was fully aware of all related movements in our surrounding sea and air spaces during the entire journey, and the situation was normal.”In response to the transit, a People's Liberation Army's Eastern Theater Command spokesperson said on July 19 that the PLA had followed the ship throughout and warned it, and the frequent provocations and showing off by the U.S. fully demonstrate that the U.S. is a maker of security risks in the Taiwan Strait. Meanwhile, the media reported that the Chinese aircraft carrier Shandong was spotted west of the Taiwan Strait's median line on July 19. It was heading south and passed through the open sea off of Kinmen. It's believed it was targeted by a U.S. Air Force RC-135 reconnaissance aircraft circling in the southwest airspace. There's a chance that the two naval vessels may have a close encounter.Nicola Beer, Vice President, European Parliament: “We admonish China not to destroy Taiwan's blossoming, but to take an active and constructive part in maintaining and executing the current status quo based on mutual and respectful dialogue.”On July 20, European Parliament Vice President Nicola Beer called on President Tsai Ing-wen. Beer said Europe is deeply concerned by China's gradual moves towards unilaterally changing the status quo, and added that only the Taiwan people can decide Taiwan's future.   美國海軍第七艦隊發布新聞稿指出，一艘勃克級飛彈驅逐艦班福特號，19日通過台灣海峽，聲明表示這次自由航行任務，表明了美方對印太地區的承諾，由於班福特號16日才進入南沙，研判是由南向北通過台海。國防部發言人孫立方說：「通過台灣海峽北駛期間，國軍全程掌握我周邊，海空域的相關動態，狀況均正常。」班福特號通過台海，共軍東部戰區發言人19日表示，全程跟監警戒，批評美國頻頻挑釁、作秀造勢，製造台海風險。不過平面媒體報導也指出，中共山東號航空母艦，19日被記錄到現身台海中線以西，南下通過金門外海，疑似被在西南空域盤旋的美國空軍RC-135鎖定目標，中美兩艦或有可能在相近時間近距離遭遇。歐洲議會副議長畢爾指出：「我們告誡中國，切勿破壞台灣的蓬勃發展，而是應該在與台灣互相尊重和對話的基礎上，積極且有建設的去維持並守護現狀。」總統蔡英文20日上午接見歐洲議會副議長畢爾，畢爾表示歐洲對中國逐漸趨向單方面改變現狀的做法表達嚴正關切，強調只有台灣人民可以決定台灣自己的未來。
