TSMC Will Send Charter Planes to Fly Employees Over?
TSMC's $12 billion 5-nanometer chip fabrication plant is set to hold the first tool-in ceremony in Pheonix, Arizona in December. U.S. President Joe Biden will also attend the ceremony. Minister of Economic Affairs Wang Mei-hua said at the Legislative Yuan that she didn't receive an invitation, therefore, she won't attend the ceremony in the U.S..
Taiwan's semiconductor leader TSMC will hold its first machine relocation ceremony in the United States in the middle of next month. U.S. President Joe Biden will attend the ceremony. Will Taiwan send high-ranking government officials to the ceremony? Minister of Economic Affairs Wang Mei-hua said at the Legislative Yuan that there wouldn't be any.
Wang Mei-hua, Economic Affairs Minister: “Because it's a private company's ceremony. It's the organizer's decision. We don't have much to comment on this one. I won't go because I have too much work to attend to here at the Legislative Yuan.”
It is reported that TSMC will charter planes from China Airlines to fly equipment and employees over. The first chartered flights took off starting Nov. 1. TSMC's chartered flights to Phoenix are expected every two weeks. Wang said that the government is happy to see the success of TSMC's investment in the U.S. However, both ruling and opposition parties took on an opposing tone. They agree that TSMC has a leading position in the global semiconductor industry, but its core technology must stay in Taiwan. It was rumored that TSMC will set up a factory in Taoyuan's Longtan District, but Hsinchu Science Park Bureau responded that there was no available land for lease. Is this a fake issue before the local elections?
Hung Mong-kai, Legislator (KMT): “Our country's citizens will see right through this if it's just garnering some attention before the local elections. And they will feel even more despised by the political parties and candidates trying to use this topic to their advantage.”
Chen Ting-fei, Legislator (DPP): “It's not a fake issue. Because everyone is striving for it. We were going to get all of these key R&D technologies to remain in Taiwan.”
If TSMC really wants to set up a factory in Longtan District, it would have to overcome problems such as land, water, and electricity. During the session on the 2nd, TSMC stock opened lower and traded higher. Its intraday stock price reached NT$393. It still has a ways to go to reestablish itself above the NT$400 mark.
