Among the eight defendants, former New Power Party Chairperson Hsu Yung-ming was the only one to have been released on bail. Some long-term issues and divisions within the party have been brought to the forefront.
On Aug. 4, former New Power Party Chairperson Hsu Yung-ming was released after posting a bail of NT$800,000. He spoke with the media following his release to proclaim his innocence. Five members of the NPP's policy committee, including Secretary-General Chen Chih-ming, showed up to support Hsu.
The party has split over Hsu's involvement in a bribery scandal. Kaohsiung City Councilor Huang Jie said the party's disciplinary committee should expel Hsu.
Our former Chairperson Hsu Yung-ming should be expelled at this time in order for society to regain its trust in us. The mistakes committed during this process, including our secretary-general even using oil to put out the fire, destroyed the image of this party. I think the secretary-general should discipline himself.
Taipei City Councilor Meredith Huang said past precedence should be used to examine Hsu's words and actions. She also listed four big issues within the party, including Chen issuing statements on his own and the party having to borrow money to pay salaries. These issues have also damaged the party's reputation, as well as the decision by members of the policy committee to publicly support Hsu. Acting NPP Chairperson Chiu Hsien-chih offered a response.
Hsu was given 24 hours to appear before the committee and explain. The disciplinary committee will independently make a decision. He is scheduled to appear at 5 p.m. As this is a criminal case and we don't know the direction of the investigation and what the facts are, it's not appropriate for the party to be in touch with him.
Chiu said he has not spoken to Hsu since the latter posted bail. The NPP's disciplinary committee has five members, including two lawyers and Taipei City Councilor Lin Ying-meng. If party members do not accept the committee's decision, they can file an appeal with the arbitration committee. If this decision is still not accepted, then they will turn to the courts.
