Investment and business issues have dominated the the Kaohsiung Mayoral by-election. KMT candidate Jane Lee criticized the Kaohsiung Government was slow in attracting businesses and investments. DPP candidate Chen Chi-mai said he was experienced in this aspect while Taiwan People's Party candidate Wu Yi-jheng said amending to the laws and sustainability are key issues.
DPP candidate for the Kaohsiung Mayoral by-election Chen Chi-mai was busy soliciting votes at local markets before visiting temples. In response to KMT candidate Jane Lee's remarks in a radio interview that the reason for Taichung's population surpassing the population of Kaohsiung, originates from problems with attracting businesses and investments.
Attracting businesses is just a slogan. The hard part is to implement and execute the plans. The plan needs to have continuity and what's equally important is to detail how to attract businesses to invest in Kaohsiung.
I was responsible for coordinating related large scale economic development at the national level when I was the Vice Premier. Therefore I am very confident.
Taiwan People's Party candidate Wu Yi-jheng thinks the final beneficiary in attracting businesses to Kaohsiung would still be the Central government. He urged the Kaohsiung legislators to push forward with the law amendment and believed that sustainability is also needed in attracting businesses.
The problem of Kaohsiung's fiscal problem is a structural health. First, the local government and the mayor doesn't know how to deal with it. Second, the economic development trend of the world is focused on the environment and industries with high added-values. Kaohsiung should aimed at attracting these type of talents and industries and not just attracting any business.
Jane Lee backfired by stating that the position of Kaohsiung Mayor was mostly filled by the DPP and that Taiwan deserves more than one party's opinion. She is looking at fighting a different war. Wu Yi-jheng agreed that the DPP has ruled Kaohsiung for a long time but has not given anything back to its residents. In response to these, Chen Chi-mai said Kaohsiung is a democratic and diversified city which had given Mayor Han Kuo-yu a chance.
