The vice superintendent of Pingtung County's Ping An Psychiatric Hospital, Yang Hsin-cheng, went hiking with friends in Laiyi Township on June 6 and went missing. After a 10-day search, Yang was found with a head injury.
Search and rescue workers retrieve the injured hiker from the mountain and transport him to a hospital by helicopter.
Thank you. Thank you.
Pingtung County's Ping An Psychiatric Hospital Vice Superintendent Yang Hsin-cheng's family thanks the rescue team. Yang went missing on the 6th after going on a hike with friends. Over 100 workers were sent out to look for him before finally locating him near a waterfall on the 16th.
(Did you drink a lot of water? River water?) Yes. (Did you feel like you weren't going to make it?) Three or four times. I recited Buddhist mantras and drank my own urine.
Yang says he survived on water and Buddhist mantras during the 10 days. Although he had a cut on his head, he was conscious and alert.
He has thoracic and lumbar spine fractures, but no internal bleeding. For someone that hasn't eaten in over 10 days, he is in remarkably good condition.
It was a half-day hike and he was at the front of the group. He may have gotten separated from the group and taken a wrong turn after getting lost.
According to reports, Yang went off scouting alone and later sent out a message saying he was lost and had fallen. As the message also said he would retrace his route along the river, rescue workers concentrated their search along the river. The mission was challenging due to pouring rain in recent days. One expert says many missing hiker cases share key commonalities.
He has medical knowledge and knows basic medical concepts. (At low altitudes), rain means a source of drinking water. He also stayed near a waterfall after making a last phone call about being near the river.
(The area is) only around 600 meters (above sea level), so the diurnal temperature variance isn't great. (Hikers that get lost) should remain where they are whenever possible and use their phones to get help if there's a signal. They have a greater chance of getting rescued if they stay where they are.
The Chinese Taipei Alpine Association says hikers should always be prepared for unstable weather and should avoid hiking alone. In addition, hikers should plan out their route, be fully equipped, and do their homework on the elements they will face before leaving home.
