Environmental Groups Hold Meeting on Energy Mix|

Local environmental groups have come together on the 8th anniversary of the Fukushima nuclear disaster to hold a meeting on Taiwan's energy mix. When discussing the possibility of rebooting the No. 4 nuclear plant, residents of New Taipei's Gongliao District said that the construction of the plant wasn't aimed to provide more power, but a move that's politically motivated. The environmental groups said they will propose an anti-nuclear power referendum and hope it can be headed on the same day of the 2020 presidential election.

Several local environmental groups held a meeting on Taiwan's energy mix on the 8th anniversary of the Fukushima nuclear disaster. Former head of Academia Sinica, Taiwan's top research body, Lee Yuan Tseh was invited to give an open speech. Lee said that as long as people in Taiwan work hard, there are opportunities to get rid of nuclear and fossil-fuel based energy generation.

If we don't change our carbon tax, then energy mix upgrade is pointless. The industries must be upgraded while the carbon tax needs to be charged, the change to energy mix can only work if it's from the bottom up.

Former New Taipei Mayor and presidential hopeful Eric Chu recently proposed to reboot the No.4 nuclear plant. Over 30 residents from New Taipei's Gongliao District said they cannot accept the proposal, and that the construction of the plant was politically motivated.

The No.4 plant was built not because there's shortage of electricity. I think the move is politically motivated because if it really was built to help supply electricity, its construction wouldn't have taken more than 30 years.

Those who are pro-nuclear power have attended the meeting as well. Huang Shih-hsiu, the organizer of the referendum on using nuclear power while renewable power is in development, stresses that the Tsai Ing-wen administration's push for a nuclear-free home is totally authoritarian. Kao Cheng-yen, former head of the Taiwan Environmental Protection Union, asks Huang to respect the group hosting the meeting. He said that the rebooting of the no.4 plant should be decided by referendums.

The public has said "no" to the nuclear-free homeland proposal, but the Tsai Ing-wen administration is still forcing the public to accept the plan. It's totally authoritarian.

There will be a referendum that pushes to use the area of the no.4 nuclear plant as a land for renewable energy generation. The referendum will be held at next year's presidential election, and it will confront the proposal to use nuclear power while waiting for renewable energy development.

On the same day, member of the Green Citizens' Action Alliance have gone to Japan to show support to local anti-nuclear power groups. They said there are still more than 40,000 residents in Fukushima who are still searching for a new home after they were affected by the nuclear disaster 8 years ago.
