Eric Chu States to Aim at 2020 Presidential Race|新北市長侯友宜就職 朱立倫表態參選2020總統

Hou You-yi was sworn in as New Taipei City mayor on Dec. 25, and said he and his team are ready to begin working. He added he will take the initiative to communicate with the central government in the future, and will also seek cooperation opportunities with Taipei City. Meanwhile, outgoing New Taipei City Mayor Eric Chu was asked about his future plans and he expressed his goal to fight for the 2020 presidential election.


Starting from today, Hou You-yi will assume the responsibility to ensure New Taipei City's four million residents will be able to live in peace and work happily.

New Taipei City Mayor Hou You-yi received the seal of the New Taipei City Government from his predecessor Eric Chu during his inauguration on Dec. 25. He said he and his team are ready to begin working immediately. He also revealed he will take the initiative to communicate with the central government in the future, as well as seek cooperation opportunities with Taipei City, to improve the well-being of residents.

I hope this statement won't be considered political. I hope this statement will be for all of Taiwan's residents, for all of our New Taipei City residents.

Hou said he received a congratulatory call from President Tsai Ing-wen following his election win. He told Tsai politics should be set aside and he hopes the central government can sincerely help with New Taipei City's infrastructure. Meanwhile, Chu was asked about his future plans after the ceremony concluded, particularly if he will enter the 2020 presidential election.

2020 is a time that many people are looking forward to. My objective is very clear, and that is to work hard for Taiwan in 2020.

He added the Kuomintang has not even held a primary yet. He said he will establish an office and travel around to hear opinions and learn how to solve problems.

City residents gave Chu a warm send-off. Many addressed him as "president," showing they support a presidential run in 2020.
