Torrential rain in southern Taiwan has led to flooding across the region. Several sections of Provincial Highway 17, which is the main access route for Pingtung's coastal townships, are submerged. Many roads in downtown Kaohsiung also flooded on the morning of June 20.
Rain pours down on Kaohsiung on the morning of the 20th, submerging roads. The water level at the intersection of Zhongshan Road and Kaixuan Road is ankle-high and vehicles spray water in all directions as they drive by.
It's awful. This has been a problem for years.
According to the Central Weather Bureau, Luzhu District received over 50 millimeters of rain on the morning of the 20th while Cianjhen, Siaogang, Cijin and Alian received over 30 millimeters. Many roads across the city were flooded.
The main access road for low-lying coastal townships in Pingtung was also flooded. Police closed Provincial Highway 17, which serves Linbian, Jiadong and Donggang, on the morning of the 20th.
Residential flooding was also reported in Pingtung's Fangliao. The water had yet to recede as of the morning of the 20th, and one senior citizen living alone in Xinlong Village said she was up all night.
I fell asleep and awoke to water pouring in from my front door. I couldn't sleep after that.
Xinlong Village is infamous for its frequent floods and the township office sent workers to the village. However, they couldn't do much due to the many private fish farms in the area. The township office says it needs time to negotiate with the property owners.
