HONG KONG HOLDS VIGIL FOR TIANANMEN SQUARE ANNIVERSARY|六四事件28周年 港燭光晚會11萬人參與

Last night, tens of thousands of Hong Kongers held a candlelight vigil to commemorate victims of the 1989 Tiananmen Square Protests. A similar yet smaller event was also held in Taipei, while president Tsai called on Beijing to "face up" to the history. This year's events in Hong Kong are especially politically charged, coming just a month before Xi Jinping's scheduled visit to mark the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong's return. Many held flickering flames, sang songs and listened to speeches calling on Beijing to fully atone for the violent crackdown in 1989. Across the Taiwan Strait, a memorial event was also held in Taipei. Heads were lowered to commemorate the incident. On Facebook, Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen said the actions of protesters at the Tiananmen Square 28 years ago inspired a generation. She also said Taiwan is willing to share experiences of transitioning to democracy with Beijing. TRANSLATED BY:JEFF CHANG
