Protests are expected to accompany today's national affairs conference, which will address one of the most controversial issues facing our society: pension reform. The National Federation of Education Unions slammed the draft reform proposal, saying that the proposed reforms are completely different from the opinions given in the pre-conference meetings they attended. They also accused the government of smearing them and said they will stage a protest to boycott the event. Members of the National Federation of Education Unions, who have participated in over 20 meetings on pension reform ahead of the national affairs conference on the issue, are now slamming the draft reform proposal announced by Vice President Chen Chien-jen, calling the proposals "unrecognizable." They also accused the government of smearing them as high-income earners, saying that they will boycott the national affairs conference in protest. ==HUANG YAO-NAN National Federation of Education Unions Chair== Whether from a procedural justice or material justice point of view, we think that the Presidential Office has been completely insincere on the pension reform issue. While groups have dropped out the conference, the People First Party say that they are participating. They have proposed a three-level financial security system as the centerpiece of the reform, consisting of a basic pension, occupational pensions, and commercial pensions, together with pension portability. ==LEE HUNG-CHUN PFP Legislator== The government must face the fact that members of the military, civil servants, teachers, and workers will all start tightening their consumer spending in anticipation (of pension cuts). This will negatively impact economic growth. ==LI TUNG-HAU Banking and Finance Dept. Prof., CTBC FM College== One major problem with this reform is that they've abolished the 18% savings interest rate with nothing to replace it with. The PFP stresses that reform must be undertaken with a vision, as well as proper methods and priorities. That is the only way to build a sustainable pension system without creating societal conflict.
