President Tsai Ing-Wen attended a celebration for the Sept. 3rd Armed Forces Day, as civil servant organizations will stage a demonstration to protest the government pension reform plan later today, Tsai tried to assure military service members that pension reform will take military personnel's interest into consideration and said that she hopes they will not believe untrue rumors about the pension reform plan. ==TSAI ING-WEN, R.O.C. President== I'm here today as the Commander in Chief to celebrate a holiday that belongs to all of us. President Tsai Ing-Wen attended a celebration ahead of the Sept. 3rd Armed Forces Day. Tsai attempted to win over members of the military, saying that she stands by the service members. She also expressed her gratitude and promised to resolve the issues facing the armed forces. ==TSAI ING-WEN, R.O.C. President== I understand that the workload is too heavy for many soldiers. Service members don't have enough time for training or even resting. Also, there is not enough space for training, which is detrimental to the troops' performance in the long term. Tsai pledged to conduct comprehensive reviews of military strategy and culture. In regards to the pension reform issue, because many soldiers will participate in the demonstration on Sept. 3rd, Tsai tried to appease them and gave her word. ==TSAI ING-WEN, R.O.C. President== Military personnel have a shorter service duration, and attrition rate is high in the military. We will take all these factors into consideration. I can promise you that. I hope you won't be bothered by those unfounded rumors. However, the Defense Ministry stressed that it is inappropriate for active-duty military personnel to attend street protests. ==CHEN CHUNG-CHI, Defense Ministry Spokesperson== It is inappropriate for active-duty military personnel to attend protests. That has always been our principle. (So you will not actively reprimand service members for participating?) That's right. (But you will do so if someone reports them?) It depends on the circumstances at the time. Public servants are taking to the streets on Sept. 3rd to protest against the government's pension reform plan. President of the Examination Yuan Wu Jin-Lin said that Sept. 3rd is a day off. Public servants attending the demonstration will not utilize any government resources, and the event is not organized by specific political parties. Therefore, these public servants are not in violation of any regulation.
