US defendant commits suicide in court after verdict / 大麻案宣判 美籍被告以預藏剪刀自刎

An American man killed himself by cutting his neck in a courtroom in Changhua County yesterday morning, after being convicted of possession of marijuana and sentenced to four years in prison. Raising questions over security failings and the court is investigating staff negligence. Court marshals and paramedics were rushing the US citizen Tyrel Martin Marhanka to ambulance for emergency treatment. He was seriously injured, blood splashed all over the court room. ==DR. LEE, SHU-YUN, Dept. of Emergency Medicine, Changhua Christian Hospital== Both sides of the neck were blooding, a big wound with cut-off blood vessels and bronchus, we made an emergent rescue, but carotid arteries and veins were all cut off, which cause lack of oxygen, and the patient was pronounced dead. The 41-year-old US citizen Marhanka was arrested in April last year, and charged with possession of marijuana. In the morning of June 16th, Marhanka in the courtroom heard he's got a four-year sentence in prison, he then took out a pair of scissors separated into two sharp metals and stabbed on both sides of his neck. ==WANG, YI-MIN, Presiding Judge of Changhua District Court== He hid the pair of scissors in the magazine, the court metal detector was not sensitive enough to detect such metals, and therefore no alarming sound. Reporter came to test the court metal detector and found one detector not working. The District Court is investigating staff negligence and switch to manual inspection at court entrances. TRANSLATED BY：ANTHONY LIN 法警和救護人員合力將滿身鮮血的李瑪翰推上救護車，雖然緊急送往醫院急救，但傷勢過重，最後仍回天乏術，法庭內、外全都是血跡，現場怵目驚心。 ==彰基急診醫師 李旭雲== 兩邊頸部都在噴血 傷口非常的大 血管都斷掉了 連氣管都破掉了 請耳鼻喉科醫師過來 然後一起在做急救的動作 只是因為頸動脈 靜脈都斷掉了 出血太多 導致病人缺氧 所以後來急救無效 彰化地院表示，41歲的美籍人士李瑪翰，去年四月遭到彰化警方查獲種植大麻，今年3月遭到彰化地檢署起訴，上午進行宣判，但李瑪翰聽到自己遭判刑四年時，拿出預藏的剪刀，拆成兩半後割頸自刎。 ==彰化地院行政庭長 王義閔== 我們研判是說他是把這把剪刀 拆開的剪刀 夾帶在雜誌裡面 因為感測門靈敏度 沒辦法去感測到他夾帶的剪刀 所以沒有發出任何警示 彰化地院解釋，死者刻意藏匿剪刀，因此金屬感測器無法偵測到。但記者現場實測，發現法院管制區出入口其中一個感測器，就算直接拿著剪刀通過，也偵測不出來，明顯已經故障，地院事發後立即改為人工檢查，而相關人員有無疏失，也已經進行調查。 記者 邱植培 彭煥群 彰化報導
