Though Premier William Lai has announced to stop the Shenao Power Plant construction, environmental groups remain concerned that it may resume after the elections. On Oct. 15, they hence called on the Tsai administration to immediately cancel environmental impact assessments for Shenao and the Guantang Industrial Park, while also forecasting a protest next month.
Although Premier William Lai recently announced the government was shelving the Shenao Power Plant project, environmental groups say the 180 is for the elections. Concerned that construction may start as soon as the elections are over, the groups called on the Tsai administration to cancel the environmental impact assessments for both Shenao and Guantang Industrial Park.
The Democratic Progressive Party government will have to ban national competent authorities from applying for development permits if it truly wants to show it is taking Taiwan's energy in the right direction.
Lai made the Shenao announcement after Guantang passed its most recent EIA. Environmental groups are condemning this, saying the Tsai administration seems to think it is playing a children's game with its constant flip-flopping. One environmentalist also criticized the Democratic Progressive Party for shirking responsibility, saying Guantang's original EIA was approved during the Lee Teng-hui era and the magistrate of Taoyuan County at the time was Annette Lu.
You're forgetting who came up with this plan in the first place. It's you. The municipal government at the time, under the leadership of Magistrate Annette Lu, did everything in its power to help the plan get approved.
The groups say the nation is befuddled by the Tsai administration's constant flip-flopping and social capital is being squandered with the referendums. The groups will hold a mass demonstration on Ketagalan Boulevard next month to make sure the ruling party hears the voice of the people.
