An earthquake measuring a magnitude of 7, occurred off the northern coast area of the Indonesian island of Lombok on Aug. 5. Hundreds are dead or injured. The Tourism Bureau says there are currently 12 Taiwanese nationals in five groups traveling in that area. They all have been traveling independently and have been confirmed to be safe.

Buildings collapsed on the 5th when a magnitude 7 earthquake struck the Indonesian island of Lombok.

Hundreds were killed or injured, while thousands were evacuated from their homes, hotels and restaurants. According to Taiwan's Tourism Bureau, there were 12 R.O.C. nationals on Lombok at the time. It has been able to contact all of them and they are all safe. Representatives from the Taipei trade office in Surabaya are en route to Lombok.

We have already gotten the contact information of most of the R.O.C. nationals there and we are in contact with them. When we get there, we will arrange accommodations for them and help them change their plane tickets so they can get off the island quickly.

Lombok is popular with ecotourists. As it is not commercially developed, most tourists going there are independent travelers rather than part of tour groups.

As far as travel agencies go, tour groups may visit Lombok but don't stay overnight because local accommodations aren't great. They just take day trips there and then leave. Independent travelers may stay there longer to experience how locals live.

The Taipei trade office in Surabaya says power and water supplies and telecom networks are not stable right now so it will help the tourists get off the island safely.
