Former Vice President Annette Lu has announced that she will leave the Democratic Progressive Party. The announcement was made after the party named another member, Pasuya Yao, as its candidate for the upcoming election in Taipei City. The DPP has expressed regret and respect for Lu's announcement.

The ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) announced Lawmaker Pasuya Yao as its candidate for the upcoming Taipei mayoral election. Hours later, the party's member, former Vice President Annette Lu made an announcement saying that she will no longer be part of a party that does not have any moral standard or principle, and that she bids goodbye to the DPP. The announcement came as a major shock to many in Taiwan. In a later post on her Facebook page, Lu expressed her views on the childcare policies in Taipei City, leading many to speculate that she will run for Taipei City mayor as an independent candidate. Lu's office did not clarity her stance since she is currently traveling abroad. Academics who are close to Lu said that the reason she quit the DPP has little to do with their candidate nomination and more to do with her dissatisfaction with the party.

Despite being in the administration and holding majority seats in the Legislature, the DPP seems not to have any concrete plan. All they want is to stay in power for another term. Many also suspect that they are making deals under the take with (Taipei Mayor) Ko Wen-je. I think this is why everyone is disappointed.

The DPP has expressed regret and respect for Lu's announcement. Former President Chen Shui-bian also said he hopes Lu's decision isn't final and that President Tsai ing-wen could try to convince her to change her mind. Many other DPP members also call on the party to get in touch with Lu as soon as possible.

I think the party needs to get in touch with Annette Lu as soon as possible to further understand her message. And we hope that Lu could stay in the party.

DPP Lawmaker Lin Chun-hsien said that if Lu actually runs for Taipei mayor as an independent candidate, it will damage the DPP's reputation. He hopes the party would approach the matter with caution.
