Beware of identity theft! The Criminal Investigation Bureau has cracked a case involving a criminal who posed as a buyer of game points on Facebook, obtained the personal information of sellers, and then used the information to apply for mobile payment accounts, which allowed him to transfer and use the victims' money. There have been 100 victims in less than half a year, with losses exceeding NT$1.2 million.
A suspect surnamed Chen runs into the residence and heads straight for the computer. The police grab him to prevent him from reaching the computer and deleting evidence. According to the police, Chen used online transactions to steal personal information. He first joined Facebook groups, posing as a buyer of game points, and then obtained the personal information and bank verification codes of sellers. He then used this information to open mobile payment accounts, pretending to be the seller. This allowed him to transfer and use the victims' money.
He told his victims, these sellers of game points, that he was going to remit the money in the morning. He then informed them because the amount exceeded the allowed limit, they had to link their accounts together. He told them the bank would send them a code via text message. At the same time, he applied for online payments with banks.
The police discovered Chen already had a criminal record for fraud. During half a year, he managed to deceive 100 people and steal over NT$1.2 million.
The smallest loss was NT$500, and the largest one was nearly NT$60,000. The reason for such a small loss was because that victim only had NT$500 in the bank.
The police remind the public to refrain from giving out their personal information such as verification codes or ID numbers to others. They also advise banks to carefully check applications to modify personal information or services.
