Buses were allowed onto the Suhua Highway on May 7. On the first day, 50 southbound buses and 100 northbound buses used the freeway. To ensure safety, the traffic authorities say safety inspections will be carried out to make sure that buses are not overweight, No decision has been made, however, regarding whether to open the highway to motorcycles and scooters
A bus heading from Suao to Dongao was the first to undergo inspection on the first day the Suhua Highway opened to buses. Tourists on the bus were very excited.
There is always more congestion on weekends and holidays, so it's more convenient to be able to use these routes. It's really tiring if we have to drive ourselves.
The Suhua Highway Improvement Project is now in its second phase. So far, only local buses and long-haul bus companies Kuo-Kuang Motor Transport and Capital Bus have applied to use the highway between Suao and Dongao, and Suao and Nanao. One bus company official says its priority is customer service and it will adjust its timetable to accommodate train schedules.
Trains coming over from Hualien can go directly from Hualien to Suao's new station. They don't stop at the old station. Our buses drive to Dongao so travelers can get off closer to the old station.
The Directorate General of Highways says it will reinforce inspections at weighing stations for the time being to make sure buses and drivers are in good condition.
We will inspect safety features on buses and make sure drivers are complying with labor laws and work hour quotas.
Officials will assess the feasibility of opening the highway to cargo trucks in the next three to six months. No decision has yet been made on motorcycles and scooters.
