Grassroots Democratic Progressive Party members want the party to nominate its own candidate for Taipei City mayor, which has made the relationship between the pan-green camp and Taipei City Mayor Ko Wen-je increasingly tense. According to media reports, Ko was originally invited to appear at a fundraising banquet but was forced to pull out, which sparked speculation that it had to do with the year end elections.
The Democratic Progressive Party has yet to decide if it will endorse Ko Wen-je or nominate its own candidate for Taipei City mayor. Grassroots members are pushing for the party to field its own candidate.
On the 4th, Lawmaker Tuan Yi-kang guaranteed on Facebook that the DPP would nominate its own candidate. According to reports, President Tsai Ing-wen met with party officials and key aides on the 3rd to talk election strategy. Ko says the DPP's reticence does not affect him.
There's no (increased pressure). Hasn't Taiwan's value already been clearly defined? (So you don't have plans to again...?) No. What's the point in all this talk anyway? Just keep Taiwan as the main focus.
Ko says the DPP's indecision does not put more pressure on him, and he has been clear on his stance on Taiwan's value. In related news, Ko was invited to appear at a Ketagalan Foundation fundraising banquet, but his appearance was canceled at the last minute.
(Will you be making headlines today?) No. I'm actually an alumnus of the Ketagalan Academy. I went (to the banquet) the last four years. Yesterday, I asked Vice Mayor Chen to make a special phone call to ask Ah-bian. Ah-bian said it would be too troublesome because of the fight today. So, forget it. If I want to see him, I can find another time to see him.
Former President Chen Shui-bian attended last year's banquet. Ko also made a brief appearance. There is speculation that Ko's appearance this year was canceled because the foundation was worried it would lose control of the dinner if Ko attended.
