Banners can be seen all over Taiwan University campus over the controversy of its president selection process. After the University's faculty and students started a "Save University Autonomy" movement, several other universities across the island including Tsing Hua, Cheng Kung and Chiao Tung University, have formed an alliance to protest against the government's intervention in Taiwan university presidential appointment, which they believe, is an infringement of Educational Systems' Autonomy
At 3 a.m. on May 4, several National Taiwan University students hung a sign on top of the "Defend Campus Autonomy" sign in front of the Fu Bell.
If you're going to hang stuff up at our school, I want to know if you are a student here, Which laws are you following? Can you tell me?
The students also hung paper flowers and other signs below the bell to show their "rejection" of "non-law-abiding university presidential candidates." The students said the selection committee can't speak for all students.
These banners (remind everyone) not to make things personal. Let's take Kuan Chung-ming, for example, and all the problems he has brought to NTU, and the entire selection committee, and the professors that benefited personally. This highlights the problem of dominating many people and covering up the voices of students.
Yellow ribbons can still be found in front of the bell, but the signs and paper flowers have been moved elsewhere. Campus autonomy supporters held a peaceful sit-in in the morning.
I absolutely support the (diploma) that you earn after four hard years at NTU with the title and name President Kuan Chung-ming (printed on it).
National Tsing Hua University, National Cheng Kung University, National Chiao Tung University and National Central University, meanwhile, have formed an autonomous action alliance to defend university autonomy. Protestors crashed a yellow ribbon event at NCKU. The two sides scuffled, but fortunately no one was hurt.
