PHILIPPINE CONGRESS APPROVE MINDANAO MARTIAL LAW EXTENSION|菲國會通過 民答那峨島戒嚴延長至年底

In the Philippines, the Congress has approved President Duterte's request to extend the martial law in Mindanao to the end of this year, as the fight against rebels in the region continues, but the move has again raised doubts about Duterte's authoritarian inclinations. Philippine legislators on July 22 voted in congressional joint-session for retaining martial law on the southern island of Mindanao until December 31 this year. 261 legislators voted in favor of the extension, while 18 voted in opposition. ==PANTALEON ALVAREZ Speaker, Philippine House of Representatives== The motion to extend the proclamation of martial law and the suspension of the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus is hereby approved by the Congress. Maute rebels and Abu Sayyaf groups took over Marawi City of Mindanao Island on May 23. President Duterte on the same day declared martial law and started air strikes and street battles. Philippine armed forces seiged Marawi and killed over 400 rebels and displaced more than 400,000 people. The congressional approval of martial law extension evoked recollections from opposition parties and civil activists of former dictator Ferdinand Marcos. ==CRISTINA PALABAY activist leader== The factual basis of the existence of a real threat of rebellion in Marawi is highly questionable. Under martial law, law enforcement can arrest suspects without a warrant. In the past few days, many human rights activists were protesting to the Congress and demanding to end martial law in Mindanao Island.
