US DESTROYER MONITORS CHINESE CARRIER IN TAIWAN STRAIT|傳美偵察機.神盾艦 近期通過台灣海峽

Media reports said that American reconnaissance planes have passed through the Taiwan Strait several times over the past month to conduct missions in the South China Sea. The U.S. Navy deployed a destroyer to monitor the passage of China's first aircraft carrier. As it is rare for U.S. naval vessels to enter the Taiwan Strait, observers say it could mean that the US is flexing its military muscles in the South China sea and showing China that Taiwan-US military cooperation is still ongoing. China's Liaoning aircraft carrier recently departed Hong Kong and returned to its home base in Qingdao through the Taiwan Strait. Taiwan deployed Kidd-class, Cheng Kung-class, and Knox-class warships to monitor the carrier formation. Reports said that a US Arleigh Burke-class destroyer also entered the Taiwan Strait to monitor the Liaoning. Some sources even speculated that the US may have deployed submarines to the seas north and south of Taiwan to observe the Liaoning's movements. American reconnaissance aircraft based in Okinawa were also reported to have started entering the South China Sea through the Taiwan Strait airspace in July, as opposed to going through airspace east of Taiwan as in the past. Military experts said that these uncommon occurrences all show that the US is stepping up monitoring of Chinese military action. ==SHIH HSIAO-WEI Editor-in-Chief, Military ＆ Aviation News== The EP-3 and RC-135 are both reconnaissance aircraft that can collect electronic signals. When they fly through here, they can capture spectrum parameters for electronic communication, as well as radar waves. Academics also said US movements through the Taiwan Strait is a signal to China not to treat the Taiwan Strait as internal waters. ==HSIEH CHENG-YU Professor, Dept. of Political Science, Soochow University== China's Navy and Air Force joint defense seem to be treating the Taiwan Strait as internal waters. The US wants it to remain international waters, and they have the power to do so. Hsieh believes that the actions of US planes and warships in the Taiwan Strait are all meant to show China that, under US-Taiwan military cooperation, the US still holds the power in the region around Taiwan.
