EU PARLIAMENT URGES CHINA TO RELEASE LIU XIAOBO AND LEE MING-CHE|歐洲議會:讓劉曉波出國就醫 釋放李明哲

Yesterday, the European Parliament passed a resolution to call on China to release Liu Xiaobo to seek medical treatment abroad and also to release Lee Ming-che as soon as possible. A few days previously, the UN's Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances officially took on Lee's case and will start to handle it during September. Yesterday morning a number of human rights groups held a media conference in Taiwan to give the message that they hoped that, under international scrutiny, both Liu Xaobo and Lee Ming-che would be released. It is two years since China arrested human rights lawyers. Human rights groups held a media conference at the Legislative Yuan and called on the international community to place China's human rights abuses under scrutiny. The European Council had just passed a motion calling on China to release Liu Xiaobo for medical treatment abroad and to release Lee Ming-che, allow him to contact his family and arrange a lawyer. Social movement groups say it has not yet been decided if Lee's wife, Lee Ching-yu will go to Geneva for the meeting or if an NGO will represent her. They say although the UN group does not have much influence, they will take any opportunity to get Lee released.
