Indigenous groups protesting a government decision that excludes all private lands from being designated indigenous territories, have now camped in front of the Presidential Office for almost 100 days. Yesterday morning, several academics and scholars showed up for support. They said the policy is tantamount to letting large corporations arbitrary develop lands that would otherwise be protected as indigenous territories.
Many indigenous demonstrators are protesting over the policy of delineating indigenous traditional territories with private land exclusion. Protestors have been camping at Ketagalan Boulevard for over three months. Several scholars and writers went to show their supports.

A policy like this, is a policy of exterminating indigenous culture. The policy allows megacorporations to do anything they want, to deprive lands in Taiwan.
The Council of Indigenous Peoples this February announced the guidelines on the delineation of Indigenous traditional territories, the guidelines have 800 thousand hectares of government-owned land listed, but one million hectares of private land were not recognized as traditional territories. Many indigenous people are concerned about future large-scale development projects would bypass private indigenous land owners and deprive their rights to express objection. They have been asking the Council of Indigenous Peoples to retract the announcement. Also the guidelines earn no progress since its submission in April to the Legislative Yuan.

For those development projects in the past years, they will immediately be legalized. That is to say, until local election next year, an election year for mayors and magistrates, all those are listed as political achievements. I remind Tsai Administration, are they being deceived? Or was their conscience being eaten by dogs?

Tsai Ing-wen told us when she assumed the office. Her administration will be the most open government, but why communication has become so distant?
The Deputy Minister Iwan Nawi of Council of Indigenous Peoples visited protestors and said that the council is not retracting the announcement; but the council considers to apply bill on indigenous land and sea for regulating private land in the traditional territories after the bill is passed. Scholar Huang Sung-li, a member to the Presidential Office Human Rights Consultative Committee, said that he is to raise the issue in June to Vice-president Chen Chien-jen.
