CHINA DROPS QUOTA FOR CHINESE STUDENTS IN TAIWAN|

Fewer Chinese students will be studying in Taiwan this year. China has cut the quota for students studying in Taiwan by half, from 2,136 to 1,000. ROC universities that give places to Chinese students said their revenue will be impacted. Chinese students studying in Taiwan said that the cut may be due to the tense atmosphere in cross-strait relations.
Every year, from late-May to mid-June, Chinese students apply for Taiwan universities. The general enrollment regulations were issued last week, and the admission quota for Chinese students studying undergraduate programs in Taiwan was decreased. Private universities, which take in more Chinese students than public universities, will suffer a greater impact. There used to be from 10 to over 100 places for Chinese students per school per year. Since admission numbers were cut by almost half this year, totaling over 1,000 places, private universities will face a decrease in their revenue.

It means that the university will suffer a loss of four years tuition fees and incidental expenses from over 30 students, which amounts to around NT$10 million. In the future, we may need to try to attract more students from Southeast Asian countries such as Malaysia and Thailand.

We have been trying hard to ask for a larger admission quota. However, China has the power to decide the number of Chinese students studying in Taiwan.
The University Entrance Committee for Mainland Chinese Students said that in recent years, China's higher education has suffered from a decline in students due to the low birth rate. This may be one of the Chinese government's considerations in cutting admission numbers. Meanwhile, Chinese students studying in Taiwan think that the tense atmosphere in cross-strait relations is also a reason.

I think it has more or less to do with President Tsai Ing-wen's reluctance to admit the 1992 consensus. A negative image of how Taiwan views Chinese people was shaped in the media. I think the cut in the student quota, as well as a decrease in Chinese tourists, are all related to the political atmosphere.

There may be a decrease in Chinese students participating in events held among us. I do not think this is a good thing for us.
Chinese students said that the undergraduate program in Taiwan is a good way to promote mutual understanding and communication between students in China and Taiwan. They think it is a pity that the approved quota of students was decreased.
