NHI TO OFFER FREE GESTATIONAL DIABETES TEST|防後遺症 孕婦明年起免費篩檢糖尿病

As people get married and start families later, the incidence of gestational diabetes has risen. The condition can cause premature delivery or large birthweights among newborns. In light of this, the government, starting next year, will begin to offer free screening for the condition to women in the 24th to 28th week of pregnancy. As the age at which couples have children has risen, so the risk for women of developing gestational diabetes has also risen. The condition results in a large birthweight, premature delivery, and increased risk of fetal and neonatal death. ==YIN CHANG-SHENG Obstetrician== Women may develop high blood pressure and diabetes then there is an increased risk of fetal death, so we would advise a test for gestational diabetes, but as it was not on the NHI, some parents would not pay for the test. The HPA said that when considering subsidising the test, it took into consideration WHO advice and the US, Canada and other countries' models. It estimates around 200,000 women a year will use the service.
