A child in Kaohsiung who should have started first grade last year instead went missing, along with his entire family, for 210 days. Neither the school nor the educational authorities were able to find them. When the police finally found the boy recently, it turned out that his single mother was worried that he would be unable to adjust to school life due to his learning disability, and moved after losing her job to avoid sending her son to school. The child is now enrolled and in school with the assistance of relevant authorities. After a half-year search, the Kaohsiung police have finally found this family that has been missing since last September. The son should have entered school last year, but his school was never able to contact them. ==BOY'S MOTHER== I've been teaching him. Look, I have the books, I've been teaching him. The boy's mother emphasized that he was being educated, but she admitted that she had moved with her son to this rented home to avoid having to send him to school. ==LI CHUN-CHIEH Branch Head, KCPD Juvenile Delinquency Prevention Brigade== The mother said that the child had a bit of a learning disability. She was worried that he would be bullied by the other children. She thought it would be safer to keep him by her side. The boy's young single mother had lost her job, and was worried that he would have a difficult time adapting to school. The police found her through her relatives and Facebook. Kaohsiung's Education and Social Affairs Bureaus have intervened with assistance, and the boy has started attending school this week. ==LIU CHING-WEN Elem. School Div. Chief, Kaohsiung City Education Bureau== The child's doctor has issued a certificate that he has autism. Following this, we will first have him undergo a special education evaluation to see if he can be given special permission to stay in school longer. The Education Bureau says that there are many possible measures to help a child with learning disabilities, and cautions that keeping a child from school could result in fines.
