EXPERTS SUPPORT DISPOSABLE PLASTIC BOXES FOR EGGS|專家會議:生雞蛋未洗選 須用一次性包材

To prevent avian flu virus from spreading, last year, the Council of Agriculture announced that fresh eggs should be carried and transported in disposable containers. However, the policy was later suspended. On Mar. 28, the COA held a meeting with experts to discuss about promoting washed eggs. Since having fresh eggs washed helps little in preventing avian flu, experts advised that unwashed fresh eggs sold to should be required the use of one-time container during the transport process. To ensure food safety for consumers and to prevent avian flu virus from spreading, the Council of Agriculture is promoting washed eggs. On Mar.28, the COA invited six experts to a webcasted meeting to discuss about the issue. Some experts think that having all fresh eggs washed before sending them to the market is unnecessary. According to international research, avian flu virus is rarely transmitted through eggs. Washed eggs will only cause a burden on the poultry industry. It is too difficult to be implemented. == CHEN MING-JU Prof. NTU Department of Animal Science and Technology == When a chicken is caught with avian flu, it produce less eggs. The egg shell becomes easily broken. As a result, these eggs rarely reach the market. Other experts also hold a similar opinion. They said that during the transport process, if washed eggs are not carefully refrigerated, they get rotten easily. In this case, washed eggs could even be more dangerous than unwashed fresh eggs. Experts think that what the government should focus on is the use of one-use containers to carry and transport eggs. Egg white left on the reusable plastic baskets by damaged eggs is unsanitary, and will transmit diseases. == LI YUAN-PAI NCHU College of Agriculture and National Resources== Dealing with damaged eggs every day is a dangerous task. Besides avian flu, one may have a high chance of contracting other diseases. After two hours of meeting, the COA and the experts finally reached a consensus. Lacking abundant supplementary measures, some experts do not advise a full-scale promotion on washed eggs. However, the COA is set to promote washed eggs. By the end of this year, it is expected that washed eggs will reach 75 percent in egg farms in Changhua and Pingtung. Details of the plan will be out in late-April.
