Former Hong Kong bookshop owner Lam Wing-kee, who disappeared in 2015 and later surfaced in custody of Chinese authorities, arrived in Taiwan yesterday. He came to participate in events at the Taipei International Book Fair, which kicks off today. In the wake of violent events that took place at the airport when Hong Kong pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong Chi-fung came to Taiwan last month, security measures were stepped up and a conspicuous police presence was on guard. In June last year, Hong Kong bookshop owner Lam Wing-kee announced that he had been abducted by Chinese authorities and taken to China where he was held until June 2016. This caused anger in Hong Kong. He was invited to Taiwan by independent book stores for the Taipei International Book Fair. ==LAM WING-KEE former Hong Kong bookshop owner== We will discuss independent book stores in Hong Kong and Taiwan and their operation it is a forum for cultural exchange. There was a conspicuous police presence of 200 officers at the airport when Lam arrived to prevent the type of aggressive treatment that Hong Kong democracy advocate, Joshua Wong Chi-fung, received from certain factions when he visited Taiwan. ==LAM WING-KEE former Hong Kong bookshop owner== Police were worried about my safety, I don't think it's necessary, but I want to thank them for this. Media asked if Lam intended to seek political asylum and he emphasized that he had committed no crime in Hong Kong and it was not necessary. ==LAM WING-KEE former Hong Kong bookshop owner== There's no need, I didn't commit a crime in Hong Kong, why would I want political asylum? Lam had originally planned to stay in Taiwan for one month, but due to security concerns the organization that issued his invitation asked him for one week. Lam emphasized that during this visit he would have some media interveiws but he would not answer any questions on his incarceration in China.
