TAPMC THREATENS GO-SLOW ACTION BEFORE LUNAR NEW YEAR|不滿漲租金 北農工會揚言春節前怠工

The dispute between the Taipei Agricultural Products Marketing Co and the Taipei City Government reached a new low. Angry at the Taipei City Council's decision to raise the rent of the Market that the company currently operates at, the company's union threatened to hold a go-slow for three days before the Lunar New Year, making it quite possible that Taipei residents will have limited fruit or vegetables to buy during the upcoming holiday. We refuse to accept a 15 percent raise, we remain at 10 percent. Holding their petition, Taipei Agricultural Products Marketing Co. union threatened Taipei City Government with a go-slow for three days before Lunar New Year. This is because the city council voted to raise the rent of the No. 1 Fruit and Vegetable Wholesale market by 15 percent from 10 percent. This would affect residents, businesses and a whole range of service industries, leaving them nowhere to buy fresh produce before Lunar New Year. ==MR. TSENG member of public== If they use this method of protest, which affects everybody's life, the city government really shouldn't raise they rent. ==MR. LIAO member of public== I think it's just a threat, to affect everyone's lives, especially at the Lunar New Year, they probably won't do it, I think. The TAPMC said that around 1,600 tons of vegetables and 700 tons of fruit come in every day to supply the Keelung and two Taipei's markets. If the process was interrupted it would affect the whole country. The union is unhappy that on Dec. 27, the city council decided to raise rents for the No. 1 Fruit and Vegetable Wholesale Market itself and the parking and cold storage by 15 percent. The city government did not give prior notice and did not discuss the move. The union said that its go-slow would consist of coming to work, but not holding auctions for produce. ==CHANG BAO-CHIH TAPMC Union Head== The petition for this go-slow has been made by all of our members. I also hope that it won't go forward, because it is huge and will seriously affect all levels of society. Currently, the petition has signatures from over a third of union members. The union said as soon as it is over two-thirds, the go-slow will start. The Taipei City Government hopes that it has some room for negotiation with the union, and the union responded that their bottom line was that rent would remain at 10 percent and not be raised. TRANSLATED BY:CLARE LEAR
