Now that new labor laws providing for one fixed and one flexible day off per week have come into effect, 24-hour convenience stores are said to be considering closing certain locations on weekends. Department stores, which are also open almost every day, say that they are shifting work schedules in response to the new regulations. Convenience stores that are open all day every day are a common sight in Taiwan. But this labor-intensive service industry is greatly impacted by the new laws governing days off. Some franchisees say that their personnel costs will increase by at least 20%. At the minimum wage of NT$21,900 a month, stores will be paying NT$1,100 in overtime for every rest day they are open. Some locations that perform poorly on non-working days are said to be considering closing on weekends. ==MEMBER OF PUBLIC== (If they close) then there'll be nothing to do if you want a snack late at night ==MEMBER OF PUBLIC== It's true that things will be less convenient, but I think it's the right thing to do. In other countries shops close at 6. I think it's good to encourage people to leave work earlier. Department stores, which open nearly every day like convenience stores, have the option of rearranging shifts under flexible working hour rules. ==LIU CHIA-HAU Spokesperson, Taipei 101== We are eligible for flexible working hours, so starting from the end of December, we began training managers in the new rules regarding overtime. It's not easy to hire new people nowadays, so we're adjusting to the new rules with the personnel we have. Right now it looks like we can handle things, so we'll see if more changes are needed down the line. The hairstyling and beauty industry is also adjusting schedules in response to the new laws. However, sources say that some hairstylists are complaining about too many vacation days, with 13 days off for January. Customers are finding it harder to get appointments, and stylists are making less income. The National Association of Small and Medium Enterprises says that the lack of supporting measures for the new rules, and the poor economy, will hamper the development of Taiwan's service industry. TRANSLATED BY:JOHN CHEN
