SAME-SEX MARRIAGE PASSES FIRST REVIEW|婚姻平權民法修正案初審通過 交朝野協商

On Dec. 26, a Legislative Yuan committee reviewed amendments for marriage equality. Opposition legislators fought over the issue. Some pan-green legislators advocated a separate law, and some pan-blues thought there should be a referendum on the issue and asked the Executive Yuan to propose a version. Towards midday, the convener of the reviewing committee, legislator Yu Mei-nu announced the end of the review and passed the amendments to cross-caucus negotiation. With loud cheers, and with thanks to police assistance, there was a happy atmosphere. The amendment to the civil code, which affords equal rights to same-sex marriage, passed the initial review today. ==TSENG YAN-JUNG Dir. LGBT Family Rights Advocacy== LGBT families have waited for this for a long time, for some it is too late, so this result is pleasing, but next we still have a long way to go and need to be proactive to protect our family rights. Groups in support of the amendment to the civil code said they thank cross party cooperation working for human rights. In the future they would communicate clearly with society to give more accurate information to resolve mutual conflict. It had been difficult to come this far. DPP caucus convener Ko Chien-ming made a resolution, proposing that the equal marriage amendment should pass the first reading, and be sent for discussion to the ruling and opposition parties. At noon, the committee chair announced completion of the first review of the combined version of Hsu Yu-jen, the New Power Party and Yu Mei-nu's version. The new amendment for same-sex marriage should be set by the parties. In addition, the Tsai Yi-you version for a special law was also sent to the committee. There will be a consultation period in the future, and after the next session, there will be a general consultation. Thus there will be a six-month period of continued communication and coordination.
