AVERAGE REAL WAGES AT SAME LEVEL AS 16 YEARS AGO|薪資成長不敵物價 實質倒退16年

Wage increases have fallen behind price level increases for the average Taiwanese. The Directorate General of Budget, Accounting, and Statistics published its report on Dec 22, indicating that both the fixed salary and average salary in Taiwan have reached record high year-on-year to NT$39,167 and NT$49,392, respectively. However, after deducting the price increases, real wages have been in recession for the last 16 years. According to the Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics, the fixed monthly salary from Jan to Oct is NT$39,167. With bonus and overtime taken into consideration, the average salary is NT$49,392, the highest year-on-year number thus far. However, after discounting the rise in price levels, compared to 2000, real wages have been receding for the past 16 years. ==MEMBER OF THE PUBLIC== Food, daily products, clothing. Everything has gotten more expensive. ==MEMBER OF THE PUBLIC== A chicken lunch box used to cost NT$90, but now it's gone up to NT$110. Realistically, compared to such rapid price increases, salary increases are very limited. As inflation has far surpassed wage increases, people do not feel any growth in their paycheck. ==RICKY HUNG, job bank general manager== Overall, the average price fluctuations in Taiwan in the past few years is within the 1% range, which is lower than the wage increases. Researchers said that since wage increases lag behind price hikes, people's purchasing power is limited. The fundamental solution is industrial transformation and upgrade. ==HSIN PING-LUNG, Assoc. Prof., NTU Grad. Inst. of Nat'l Development== In the long run, the government needs to transform and upgrade the industry structure in Taiwan. To revive the economy, the most direct and effective way is to raise the minimum wage or pressure the industry to raise wages by announcing recommended salary levels. Also, the average work hours per month from Jan to Oct decreased by 5.8 hours year-on-year to 168.1 hours. This is mainly due to two additional public holidays in Oct. The unemployment rate in Nov was down to 3.87%.
