In Changhua's Lukang, there is a historic building over one hundred years old known as the Heqi Mansion, which collapsed five years ago after torrential rain. With effort from the county government and cultural heritage workers, it has been reconstructed, and now, the old building is like new again. The heavy door opens onto a spacious and grand main hall. Cultural heritage workers were overjoyed at the evidence everywhere of the craftsmanship of local Lukang artisans. ==WEI HSIU-CHUAN, Dir., Historic Lukang Development Association== The series of decorated windows with chrysanthemum flowers or money are linked with joints so that they can be a large single screen or they can be used as room dividers. A decorated window has many different meanings depending on the permutations and combinations of patterns and clever design. The former owners were the Wang family, who worked in the financial industry. Although the building is located in an alley, the Western façade and interiors are luxurious. It is a witness to the history of Lukang's development. Five years ago the Heqi Mansion collapsed in heavy rain. The reconstruction process was difficult for cultural heritage workers. ==HUNG MING-HSUAN, Lukang cultural heritage researcher== For the restoration work, they used what was already here then, for example, the ruins of the old parts you are looking at now, they collected and preserved them and then put them back into the house in their old places, at the first, second and third entrances, so that the rooms in the building would be as before. The mansion is the most prominent of the wealthy merchants' houses in Lukang, and shows the best of the construction techniques of its time. The county's Cultural Affairs Bureau spent NT$20 million on repairs and obtained a 10 year lease from the owner. In the future, it will become a showcase for Lukang's artisans.
