Many kids from dysfunctional families require extra care and attention at school. However, once vacation starts, the support extended to them is very often discontinued. In light of this, an organization in Sanxia, New Taipei City, aims to become a second home for these kids by providing them with continued support and companionship.
The kids at Xiaocao Book House come from 8 local elementary and junior high schools. Like most afterschool programs, these children are given a leg up on school work, but here they are also taught an even more important lesson.
==LIN CHUN-CHENG, Xiaocao Book House founder==
We're also a school that teaches kids how to dream. Everyone, including children, needs to dream. Once they have a dream or a goal, we show them how to make it come true.
And indeed the kids do dream. This year, they decided to bike around the island.
==LIN CHUN-CHENG, Xiaocao Book House founder==
First they had to write up a proposal. Since we didn't have bikes nor money, we needed to engage sponsors with the proposal. So they did the work, figured out the map and decided on an itinerary. They even talked to potential sponsors themselves.
Lin Chun-Cheng, whom the kids look upon as their older brother, is actually a local himself. After spending some years working in the television industry, he returned to Sanxia to help save his family business. But his own experience growing up motivates him to do even more for his hometown.

I also came from a problematic family. My dad was a drunk, and there were many problems at home. But this is also why I could identify with the kids. I understand their predicament. I know how to better help them turn their lives around.
The key idea in Lin's approach is companionship. Kids from dysfunctional families are often forced to confront the harsh realities of life early on. But knowing that someone will always be there for you softens the blow.
==HSIAO YA-WEN, Xiaocao Book House teacher==
The biggest challenge? Every one of them is tough. And they require you to put in everything you've got. For instance, I've been trying to show some of them how to wash their face and their hair properly. Then a kid told me he had never washed his face before, and he was already in the fourth grade. I felt so happy that I had made a difference, but at the same time, I felt sad, too.
With the help of Lin and other teachers at the book house, the kids learn how to make their dream come true. And in the process, they've matured and grown more confident.
==LO HUI-MEI, Director of Student Counseling, Sanxia Elementary School==
What we've seen is that over the past four years, the book house has been there for the kids when their families weren't. And we feel that the kids have become more emotionally stable and communicative over time.
At the book house, kids grow and mature in love and support. Lin's biggest wish is to help these kids turn their lives over for a different, better future.
