This year, Taitung has invited 14 American college students to teach English at several rural elementary schools, but transportation is a big problem for them as the schools are often very far away. With special assistance from the Registry of Motor Vehicles, many of them were able to obtain licenses for driving scooters, but not without some nerves and shrieking.
With a helmet on, she drives the moped in a straight line for seven seconds. This female American college student was just too nervous. Accidentally crossing the line, an alarm bell went off, and so did the girl, giving off a shriek. Not passing the test, her only choice was to try again next time. The other drivers rejoiced for passing this most difficult portion of the exam without a hitch.

Taitung is beautiful. And there are huge highways that it are so nice to drive the scooter up and down and see all of the scenery for yourself, with the freedom of the scooter.
This year Taitung invited 14 American college students who received scholarships to serve as foreign language teachers at rural elementary schools. However, because transportation is not very convenient in the countryside, the Taitung RMV set the students up to take scooter license exams. They have not only prepared written exams in English, but let the students practice. However, in America people tend to drive cars, not mopeds, making the students quite nervous about the road test.

I have never done a driving test on a course quite like this, where if you make a mistake. It is that kind of...interactive thing.
After the last exam, there were two students who didn't pass, but luckily they both passed after retaking the test. The RMV says this is the third year they have organized a moped licensing exam for foreign teachers, and the response has been very positive.
==CHOU CHIH-CHANG, Dir. Taitung RMV==
This year is the third year we have organized these road tests, letting them get more familiar with transport here first, how to use a scooter, and we have also discussed safety.
Holding the licenses, hot off the press, everyone was full of smiles, yet they were all saying the test was truly very difficult. They signed a contract with a moped rental company and could get on the road at any time. They added that Taiwanese drivers are scooter masters. They have some skills the Americans may not be able to pick up.
