After the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' three-day negotiations with Kenya, the 5 Taiwanese telecom fraud suspects were still forced onto a chartered flight bound for China. The Presidential Office, the Mainland Affairs Council and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have all lodged strong protests.
On August 5, Kenya's court acquitted 5 Taiwanese telecom fraud suspects and ruled that they should be deported back to Taiwan. Under the pressure from China, however, the police forced them onto a chartered flight bound for China at 2 am on August 8. The President's Office expressed regret over the deportation, while the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Justice also expressed serious protests against it.
==CHEN MING-TANG, Administrative Deputy Minister of Justice==
We will issue a protest against the Kenyan police for not following the court's verdict. They did not notify us before sending our people to China. It made no sense that they did this after the court issued the verdict.
Although Ambassador Chen immediately started negotiations and applied public pressure to the authority with international media and human rights organizations, the police still ignored the request and detained the 5 Taiwanese. During the police's second attempt to deport them to China, Ambassador John Chen had to present the court's ruling at the airport to stop it. Prior to an arranged meeting with the Ambassador on the 8th, the police decided to send the suspects to China. Even though the Ambassador made it to the airport in time, his attempt was in vain. The Mainland Affairs Council expressed deep regret and protest against China's contempt for human rights and the court's verdict.
==CHIU CHUI-CHENG, Deputy Minister, Mainland Affairs Council==
This was a violation of human rights. This morning, we immediately expressed our deep regret and issued a strong protest to China.
The Mainland Affairs Council has requested that China follow the Cross-strait Mutual Legal Assistance Agreement to report to Taiwan if the suspects' personal freedom is restricted after arriving in China. The government will negotiate with China based on past cooperation to extradite the suspects back to Taiwan for further trial.
