TSMC Holds Ceremony for 3nm Production in S. Taiwan

TSMC held a ceremony for its 3nm mass production and factory expansion in Southern Taiwan Science Park. Chairperson Mark Liu attended in person, and the media were able to tour the factory.

The cannon fired after the beam was erected, announcing the factory expansion project and the start of 3-nanometer mass production. Different from the past, TSMC invited the media to participate in the ceremony and even allowed journalists to tour the factory and take pictures. The ceremony was interpreted by outsiders as a declaration of TSMC's determination to deeply cultivate its roots in Taiwan, hoping to dispel the outside world's fears about TSMC's "de-Taiwanization" and technology outflow after setting up a factory in the United States.

Mark Liu, Chairperson, TSMC: “TSMC continues to expand its production capacity in Taiwan. The construction of the second phase of our U.S. factory is also being carried out simultaneously to strengthen trust with customers. It will also increase the momentum of TSMC's future growth.”

Wang Mei-hua, Minister of Economic Affairs: “A while ago, the media often wanted to ask me if TSMC went to the United States to set up a factory, will there be a problem of de-Taiwanization? We take this opportunity to tell you there's not going to fly for de-Taiwanization.”

Chairperson Mark Liu said that the yield rate of the 3nm process is already comparable to the yield rate of the 5nm mass production. TSMC is developing new products with customers and will start mass production. The ceremony was a chance for TSMC to announce to the world that it has the technology to mass produce at 3nm.

Mark Liu, Chairperson, TSMC: “Compared to 5nm process technology, or 3nm process' logic density increased by about 60 percent. This is 30 percent to 35 percent lower power consumption at the same speed, the most advanced technology in the world.”

TSMC held a lively ceremony in Tainan. However, the handover of land for its 2nm factory in Central Taiwan Science Park has been postponed as the director of Taichung City's Urban Development Bureau still hasn't assumed office. The handover was originally scheduled to take place in the second quarter of next year but may be delayed until the third quarter. In addition, the military also reported that by the end of 2023, four brigades will be established responsible for protecting important national infrastructure such as oil and electricity in the combat zone, and also TSMC's plants. However, this has not yet been confirmed.
